Ecclesiastes is a book of the Old Testament. In it, the speaker talks about the emptiness (often translated 'vanity') of worldly pursuits and endeavours, since everything on Earth must eventually die, crumble or decay.

The author of Ecclesiastes is believed by many to be Solomon writing in his old age. Ecclesiastes is grouped with the wisdom literature, which also includes Proverbs and the Song of Songs, other works attributed to Solomon. It is a very philosophical book of the Old Testament.

One of the most famous parts of Ecclesiastes is Chapter 3, which begins "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven". The next seven verses list opposite actions, eg "a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build," teaching that a person's behaviour cannot be the same all the time, but must be thoughtfully adapted to each fresh situation.
