Esther (Biblical book)
From A Storehouse of Knowledge
Esther is one of the historical books of the Old Testament. It tells the story of how Esther, a Jewish woman, found favour with the Persian King Ahasuerus and was able to save the Jews in his kingdom from persecution; it is something of an oddity in that these events are disjunct from the main narrative of Jewish history told in the other historical books from Joshua (or even Genesis) to Nehemiah. Esther is also the only book of the Bible that does not mention God, although His influence is apparent in the events that take place.
Esther is an important book in the Jewish faith, and is traditionally read aloud in its entirety during the festival of Purim.
