I Corinthians

The First Letter to the Corinthians (or 1 Corinthians or I Corinthians) is a letter written by St Paul to the early Christians in Corinth (in modern-day Greece). It contains one of the most commonly quoted passages in the Bible (particularly during marriage ceremonies), which is in the thirteenth chapter of the letter. The key verse is St Paul's encapsulation of the three virtues that are the cornerstone of a successful Christian life: "faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love" (1 Cor 13:13). Interestingly, although its use at weddings suggests that St Paul was writing about romantic love, this is actually an imprecise interpretation: St Paul's conception of Christian love is actually a much more general love for one's neighbour and for God, as was also frequently emphasised by Jesus.
