Jeremiah
From A Storehouse of Knowledge
Jeremiah was a prophet whose words are recorded in two books of the Old Testament, Jeremiah and Lamentations. He is considered one of the four major prophets, alongside Isaiah, Ezekiel and Daniel.
Jeremiah was the most important prophet at the time Jerusalem was conquered by the Babylonians - a pivotal event in Israelite history that marked the end of the kingdoms established by Saul and David and the taking into exile of the Jewish people. Jeremiah's (and, by extension, his people's) woe following this event is recorded in the Book of Lamentations; to this day, the word 'Jeremiad' is used to describe a long, sad piece of writing or speech after him.
