Jerusalem

From A Storehouse of Knowledge

Jump to: navigation, search

Jerusalem, the City of David, is the traditional capital city of Israel, where our Lord was crucified. Recently Jerusalem celebrated 3,000 years of existence. It fell under the control of the State of Israel in the 1967 Six Days War, but East Jerusalem remains heavily Palestinian and the status of that sector has not been settled. It contains many holy sites sacred to all three major Abrahamic religions. For Jews, the Temple Mount and the Western "wailing" Wall. For Christians, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Via Dolorosa (the Way of Grief). For Muslims the Dome of the Rock, which is the third holiest shrine in Islam. Most nations with diplomatic relations with Israel maintain embassies in Tel Aviv rather than Jerusalem.
