Joel (Biblical book)
From A Storehouse of Knowledge
The Book of Joel is a prophetic work included in the Old Testament and grouped with the minor prophets. It foretells a terrible plague of locusts.
The first two chapters of the book describe the coming of the locusts and the great destruction they will cause. When the locusts come, the prophet calls on the people to repent of their sins, emphasising inward repentance and changed ways over outward displays of righteousness - "rend your heart and not your garments" (Joel 2:13). God then takes pity on the people and gives them years of prosperity after the locusts have gone.
The third chapter describes the Last Judgement, which it says will take place in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. Rather than individual people, the Last Judgement as foretold by Joel seems concerned with the deeds of whole nations - Judah will be rewarded, while Egypt and Edom are punished.
