Malachi (Biblical book)
From A Storehouse of Knowledge
The Book of Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament. It is a prophetic work, usually considered one of the twelve minor prophets. Most of the book consists of words spoken by God to the prophet Malachi, recorded as direct speech.
At the start of the book, God briefly discusses Edom, an enemy nation to Israel which appears recently to have been destroyed (this may be the destruction foretold in the Book of Obadiah). God says that Edom will not be rebuilt.
The book then moves on to condemn various practices of the Jews of the time, particularly their priests, who are accused of offering impure sacrifices, dishonouring God, and generally not acting as would befit their office.
Perhaps the most interesting passage to Christians is the beginning of Malachi 3, where God promises to send "a messenger" (Malachi 3:1) who will purify the priesthood and cause men "to bring offerings in righteousness" (Malachi 3:3). To Christians, this appears to be a prophesy relating to the Messiah, ie Jesus.
The book ends with a prophecy that Elijah will return before the Last Judgement (Malachi 4:5-6).
