Jump to: navigation, search

Etymology:

"Martyr" is from the Greek μαρτυς for "witness"

A martyr is someone who willingly gives up their life for a cause. The most notable martyr, of course, is Jesus Christ, who gave up his life on Earth in agony to atone for our sins and to create a path to Salvation for mankind.

Many other martyrs have followed in this painful tradition due to their faith in Christianity. The first was St Stephen, who was stoned to death as told in the Book of Acts.

False martyrs

People who sacrifice their lives for ignoble causes[1] are called "false martyrs".
