Monotheism

Etymology:
"Monotheism" is from the Greek μονος for "alone" and θεος for "god".Most religions were originally polytheistic,[Fact?] though some Greeks began to accept monotheism, and the ancient Egyptian religion was monotheistic for a time. Monotheism, though, can be traced back to creation, as Adam and Eve worshipped the one God.
Monotheism is distinguished from henotheism, the practice of worshipping one god but possibly accepting others, and from pantheism, which holds that God and the universe are synonymous.
Interestingly, even some polytheistic religions have resemblances to monotheism. For example, Hinduism believes that all the gods are ultimately part of the supreme creator-god, Brahman.
Greek pagans believed in an "unknown god", who St. Paul told the Greeks was the Christian God.
