Schism

From A Storehouse of Knowledge

Jump to: navigation, search

A schism is a separation or division in an organization, usually referred to in religion but can be used in other contexts. One such example is the Great Schism of 1054, which divided the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches due to theological differences.

The term schism when used by Catholic and Eastern Orthodox denominations implies a rejection of the proper authorities of the church, since they belief in an episcopal ecclesiology with apostolic succession; whereas, as used by other Christian denominations, it does not have the same implication, many other denominations do not believe that there is a single proper form of church governance.
