Wiki

From A Storehouse of Knowledge

Jump to: navigation, search

Wiki refers to a type of web site that allows users to directly edit pages on the site. Wikis are intended as collaborative platforms and include provisions for communication, networking and auditing of user activity. The term "wiki" is purportedly taken from a Hawaiian word for fast, "wiki-wiki." The first instance of wiki software was written by Ward Cunningham to support collaborative activities for the Portland Pattern Repository a software related special interest group. The most notable wiki is Wikipedia. This site, A Storehouse of Knowledge, is a wiki.

Because of Wikipedia's policy of allowing and encouraging almost anyone to edit, wikis are generally associated with free editing and collaboration among large numbers of users. However, this need not be the case, and private wikis with only a few users are used by many businesses as a tool for sharing information and ideas.
