Zephaniah (Biblical book)
From A Storehouse of Knowledge
The Book of Zephaniah is a book of the Old Testament that records the words of the prophet Zephaniah, who lived during the reign of Josiah. It is usually considered one of the twelve minor prophets, among which it is one of the shorter texts.
Zephaniah prophesies the destruction of several nations, all as a result of God's vengeance. These include Judah, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush and Assyria - note that unlike other prophets such as Obadiah who were concerned with foretelling the doom of the Israelites' enemies, Zephaniah does not exempt his own people from God's wrath. However, he does say in Zephaniah 3 that after the destruction, Jerusalem will be reestablished and what is left of the Israelites will live as a righteous people (Zephaniah 3:13-14).
Zephaniah predicts that the cataclysmic destruction will take place on "the day of the LORD" - a day of great turmoil and upheaval (Zephaniah 1:14-15 and onwards). Much of this section could be taken as foretelling the Last Judgement of Christian belief, as well as or instead of a specific day of violence among the nations of his time.
