AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, is a sexually transmitted viral disease which infects the white blood cells that fight infection in the body. It does not itself kill anyone, but it suppresses the sufferer's immune system, leaving him wide open for other opportunistic infections.

In North America, AIDS is widely transmitted among the homosexual and intravenous drug user communities.
