Absolute alcohol refers to the amount of pure ethanol contained in a drink. The absolute alcohol content of a drink can be calculated by multiplying the drink's volume by its alcohol by volume (ABV). For example, 12 US customary ounces of 5% ABV beer contains

0.05 ounces of alcohol/ounce of beer * 12 ounces of beer = 0.6 ounces absolute alcohol, or one American standard drink.
