April 18 is the eighteenth day of April.


1942: American B-25s, flying off of aircraft carriers, attack Japanese cities in what becomes known as the Doolittle Raid. It is the first aerial bombing attack on the Japanese homeland.

1943: Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy Isoroku Yamamoto is killed in the South Pacific when the bomber he's flying in is intercepted and shot down by American P-38 Lightnings based on Guadalcanal. Admiral Yamamoto was considered one of Japan's greatest strategic thinkers, and his death is a great victory for the United States.

1988: The US Navy clashes with the navy of Iran in Operation Praying Mantis, which ends with two Iranian oil platforms destroyed and two Iranian frigates sunk and another damaged. It is the largest battle fought by the US Navy since World War II.
