Croatia is a country in the Balkan region of south-east Europe, which occupies much of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and has land borders with Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina and, at its southern tip, Montenegro. Its capital city is Zagreb.
Until the early 1990s, Croatia was a part of Yugoslavia. When Yugoslavia broke up, following a period of conflict, Croatia became one of the first former Yugoslav nations to gain independence.
Popular sports in Croatia include basketball and football. Croatia's international football team has been moderately successful during its short existence, and came in third place at the 1998 World Cup, with striker Davor Suker winning the Golden Boot for most goals scored during the tournament.
