Luxembourg is a small constitutional monarchy situated in western Europe and a founding member of the European Union. It is landlocked, and has borders with Belgium, Germany and France.
Luxembourg is the world's only independent grand duchy. Before the nineteenth century, Europe used to contain many small sovereign entities, which were often ruled by grand dukes. Since then, most of these have been assimilated into the larger nations that exist today, but thanks to a quirk of history Luxembourg remains independent.
Although Luxembourg is quite flat, it has produced several successful climbers in the sport of cycling, including Andy and Frank Schleck.
